Probably the busiest golfing week of the year got underway on Monday 10th July when 40 or so participated in the Gentlemen’s Roll-up. Organiser John Harrison with playing partners Alan Ellison and John Turner took first prize under a leaden sky.
On the Tuesday, the weather deteriorated to monsoon levels. Amazingly 30 mixed pairs gallantly took part in a shorter 9-hole competition, eventually won by unknowns Coutts & Bailey. The real winners were the 60 players who came in soaked, enjoyed a drink at the ‘Roger and Out’ pub, and feasted on a fantastic buffet that evening.
The best day for sunshine was saved for Captain’s Day to the Ladies on the Thursday. Around 80 players enjoyed good golf, Halfway House service from gentlemen who made The Savoy look amateur, and a glass of Prosecco courtesy of the captain after the prize presentation. Winner of the ladies’ prize was Judy Read with a nett 70, closely followed by Mavis Maloney and Fi Tweedle. A special highlight was sharing afternoon tea with the Bridge Ladies.
A full house of 171 players took part in the Captain’s Day men’s competition. There were 30 or so of these who had scored under 70 nett in an earlier qualifying round, so one of these was likely to win overall with a similar second score. At the end of the day, after Nigel Koenen had finally left the Roger & Out, the outcome was a 5-way tied score after two rounds. Winner of the Captain’s Prize on a card play off was Chris Daniels, with Nick Crossthwaite narrowly missing out.
Chris and Nick received their prizes towards the end of the Captain’s Dinner Dance on the Saturday evening. Neil and his team produced a fabulous 4-course meal, whilst Mr Captain presented a decanter of vintage 1994 port to each of the ten tables. The evening was rounded off with live music from soul band ‘Real Breeze’ and Ken Webb’s ‘Tom Daly dive’ down the clubhouse staircase. Glad you’re alright now Ken! Niall Curwen took the top prize at Captain’s Day to the Juniors in a very sunny finish to a wonderful week.
